DRAMA CLUB, Ananda Chandra College

Ananda Chandra College has had a rich heritage of putting up drama events, since its inception. The first English performances of William Shakespeare’s plays in North Bengal, had happened in the auspices of this college in the 1970s. Carrying on that rich legacy, the Drama Club was formally convened in 2022 by Samik Dasgupta, Department of English-

inauguration of add on course "DRAMA IN PRACTICE"

Activities

  1. The first performance was a forum theatre experiment, inspired by the ideas of Augusto Boal. It was based on the idea of women’s empowerment, specifically looking at a woman’s right to manage her own finances, without the interference of her father/husband/partner or any man in her life. This was done in an interactive manner, with problems and solutions elicited from the audience. The occasion for the performance was the International Working Women’s Day Celebration of 2022, held on 3rd March, 2022. The students of the Department of English designed and performed the whole play, under the supervision of Samik Dasgupta.
  2. The second performance was on 2nd September, 2022- This was a short skit by students of the Department of English, to commemorate the occasion of the Foundation Day of the college. The play tried to highlight the moral dilemmas of an ageing professor who is finding it hard to cope with the pressures of online teaching, necessitated by the pandemic.
  3. The third performance was an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s short story, The Job. The adaptation was titled Chakrir Khonje.  it was performed as part of the International Working Women’s Day Celebration of 2023, held on 15th February 2023. Students of Bengali and English departments had created the play, based on a script by Samik Dasgupta.
  4. The fourth performance of the drama club was on 12th May, 2023. This was a set of three short performances by participants in the add-on course, Drama-in-Practice. The three performances were based on three texts by Rabindranath Tagore-Khudito Pashan, Chandalika and Streer Potro. 34 Students from English, Bengali, History, Geography, Political Science, Mass Communication and BA Program created these plays, under the supervision of eminent facilitators like Dr. Tamojit Roy, Dr. Apurba Kumar Saha, Dipankar Ray and Sabyasachi Dutta.
